I cannot believe how fast they kick you out after major surgery these days. I am not sure if it is because the insurance company doesn’t want to pay for it or if it is the fact that we are always short on rooms and you just get kicked out. One of our patients just got a new kidney on Tuesday and she is going to be discharged tomorrow. I remember back in the middle 90s when I actually worked on the floor they would stay a minimum of 2 weeks. Now it is just days. They get to go to a hotel room to stay for probably a week, if that, and then they are sent home to come to clinic 2-3 days a week for at least the first month until we get the medications at a stable level. I could understand some of them might actually feel okay and not want to stay in the hospital but I tell ya if it was me and I still felt like crap I’m not going anywhere.

Because this is true and surgery (especially if it’s elective) can be so expensive, I’ve seen places in exotic destinations where you can have such surgeries performed. You can stay in their facilities much longer– and get a vacation out of it…for about the same price! Lasik anyone?
