I was watching Animal Planet yet again…it never seems to fail, I’ll surf around and just end up there. Today I ended up there when they were talking about vultures. What I found out was that these ugly birds consume the dead and diseased carcases of pretty much anything found from their sight and sense of smell. I’ve seen them down here on the roads scraping up the remains of squirrels and anything else that gets nailed by a vehicle.
This particular bird is a Turkey Vulture (aka Buzzard) which lives down here in the south. You can never really appreciate how big they are until you see one up close. Their body length is 24-25 inches (around 2 ft long) and a wing span of 5-6 feet. Oddly enough their weight is from 3.5 - 5 lbs and for the size of the bird I find that somewhat interesting.
Makes you wonder what other ugly ass animals are out there that have a purpose.
