While working at a hospital you don’t always get the time off just because it is a holiday. Matter of fact, some people prefer to work holidays due to either having no family in the area, no children to spend it with or just avoiding your family all together. I prefer working the holidays myself. They have always been quiet days. I have an excuse to avoid pretty much everybody when I get off and just make like a fox and hole up in my place with my dogs. I can’t remember when I started not liking holidays but it still seems to be true to this day as I am working yet again for Thanksgiving and Christmas but I’d just as soon prefer working them than dealing with anybody else.
For some it is more of an expectation that you show up and be cheerful whether you want to or not. Decisions happen sometimes on where Thanksgiving will be held whether you had input or not. It is just too hard dealing with all of that sometimes and I can so totally understand why a lot of us choose to work. Working though gives you some sort of satisfaction in a way though because the kids who are not allowed to go home, some get visits from their family, some don’t. You get to keep them company and they do get thanksgiving dinner here so that they feel they are not missing out on too much from being in the hospital. So I guess all in all those of us who actually prefer working the holidays help out in a small way.
Be sure to check out the Postie Carnival for this week over at Beth’s.

I have a few contentious family members that I would not want to spend holidays with even if it was an option (it’s not,) so I can completely understand.
Another thought raised by your post: I’ve known quite a few people who have made it their habit to work on holidays so that others could have time off. Jewish folks working Christmas, Christians working the Jewish high holy days, singles working the holidays so others could be with family. Almost all of them (the ones I’ve known personally) are in the medical professions. It doesn’t surprise me at all that people who have dedicated their lives to such service would do this act of kindness for others.
Visiting for the Postie Carnival. Mahalo for sharing!
if i could only invite/see the people that i like during the holidays, it would be an awesome time for me. as it stands, i get anxious and annoyed during this time of year. totally understand where you are coming from.
