IT Degrees

This day and age everybody needs to know something about computers. I am actually halfway through my degree and had to stop because I don’t have the money to pay for school and I refuse to get any loans and I make too much money for grants. What kills me is the fact that people will not hire you without seeing that you have a degree in a certain field and more importantly certificates such as a Cisco certification even though you may know it. I mean if you have friends who actually went to school for this stuff calling or emailing you asking questions on how to do something then obviously you know it but employers will not take that at face value no matter how many questions you many answer correctly. Growth in this field is going to explode even more than it already has because computers will be replacing a lot of workers.

For me, if I had had the money to go to college straight out of high school I would already be in this field of choice as I have always been interested in the IT field ever since I was young. Now with my time nearing an end, as in retirement from the hospital by choice, I need to hurry up and finish getting my degree including the certificates so I can get a job that I hope I would love because I would be doing what I love doing which is fixing and solving computer issues as well as setting up networks.

I’ve also been struggling with the fact that some companies won’t employ you unless you have all the official qualifications for the job, and though I believe that a lot of people with the most valuable experience don’t have qualifications, I also realize that its a big risk for a company to employ someone who doesn’t have anything relevant behind their name.

As for myself, I’ve been working in the software development industry for nearly 6 years, without any qualification, and strangely enough I’ve always been employed

I guess in SA it really depends on the size / type of company which you want to work for, because I know some of the people at my current company might have qualifications, but not at all relevant to their jobs here, and still they’re excellent at it.

One day however, I still want to do at least a diploma in something IT related. I’ve found that when trying to immigrate to either New Zealand or Australia, a qualification is absolutely essential.

Exactly why I need to finish getting my degree. I know of 1 friend who would higher me without a degree and he is in a position to do that but I most likely wouldn’t get what I could if I had a degree and it would not be a heck of a lot more than I make now at the hospital.
