ER Visits

I honestly wonder what people are thinking when they show up in the emergency department sometimes. I was doing some transcriptions tonight and there was a girl who went in for a headache and some diarrhea. All she got out of it was 600 mg of Motrin which you can get at any store and told to go buy some Imodium if the diarrhea persists. Then there was a guy who went in for a sore throat and received an IM shot of an antibiotic. Now why can’t these people get a primary care physician for these kinds of symptoms? I’ll bet they each paid at least $500.00 just for walking through the ER door. I know when I had to go for a Hydrocortisone shot plus some other meds after a severe allergic reaction I paid $700.00. It’s insane how much they charge but I swear for colds, headaches, sore throats — that’s what a primary care physician is for and a hell of a lot cheaper.

  1. I can’t imagine why any one would spend the money to go to the ER in the US and pay all of that money over diareah unless it had persisted for quite some time and they were worried about dehydration or some serious medical condition causing the situation, or that could be affected by the situation.

In Canada that sort of thing happens all the time, but it’s part of the side affect of the free health care system. We have a shortage of family doctors and for that reason a lot of people are forced to go to the ER for routine medical needs, because they don’t have a family physician to go and see. None of the General Practitioners in my area are accepting new patients. Luckily, I’ve had my family doctor for years.

Yeah, people have been known to call the ambulance for “belly pain” that turns out to be gas…I’m sorry..ER= EMERGENCY room..not bleeding, not dying, got all your body parts attached?…not an emergency

  3. LOL boo-boo’d? That’s a new one. One of our nurses will say tee-tee and it drives me insane.
