Eating Habits

I was listening to the local morning radio show this morning and they were talking about eating habits as a child because apparently over in England if a child is obese they can be removed from the home citing abuse. In a way I guess it could be if the parents do not stop the child from eating whatever they want and they are so overweight it is detrimental to their health. When I was growing up I was not allowed sodas or any kind of candy and very, very limited amounts of “junk food”. Even now I really do not eat all that much candy or junk food but I do have my sodas because I don’t drink coffee and I have to get my caffeine somewhere.

I remember in high school though when I finally got a job and I was paying for my lunch instead of bringing it in which was always a bologna/cheese sandwhich, which to this day I still eat everyday at work, I’d head over to the ROTC office and for breakfast it was always a Dr. Pepper and some peanut butter cookies. Then for lunch, I’d go back to the ROTC office and buy a Dr. Pepper, bag of cheetos and a Mr. Goodbar. Every single day I’d eat that unless we’d sneak off campus and eat out. It’s a wonder none of us blew up like balloons. I weighed a buck o’ 5 when I graduated high school. That’s 105 lbs for you folks who don’t understand the lingo. At 5 ft 8 in, svelt doesn’t cover what I looked like but I really couldn’t gain any weight then. Of course that’s not an issue now but that’s another story.

I snack way too much now and see that my daughter is apt to pick up my habits. I asked my mom if I snacked in school and she thought a minute and then said, “No, you pretty much only ate at mealtimes.”

No wonder I was thin in HS. I need to get back in that mindset/

I wasn’t heavy as a small child- in fact I didn’t gain weight until I had my tonsils taken out. I never ate candy when I was little-I rarely remember drinking soda. My biggest vice from the age of 2 to probably 5 was orange juice. When I got into junior high my school offered a snack stand that had milkshakes and the like- this began my downfall. Now I’m fat, I won’t say how fat, and miserable. Although I do believe obesity is a disease- it isn’t just about will-power. I’m one of the strongest people around yet I cannot stop drinking soda.

It’s not necessarily a bad thing to snack. Most doctors recommend eat 5 small meals a day and eliminating your big meals. Eating big meals can lead to overeating.
