When I’m Old

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011 | Health with Comments Off on When I’m Old

Recently one of my coworkers has had a rash of her family and extended family die from either natural causes or accidents. Makes you wonder what it will be like when you become older, if not ancient, by the children’s standards of age. Will there finally be those flying cars? Will there be a cure for cancer and any other disease out there? Who knows but it will be an interesting time to say the least.

Back to my coworker though. I have to wonder, as some of them were fairly old, if they had . You may have seen some of the commercials out about them. They might look silly to some of us but I know they do work well. One of my other coworkers father had one before he started becoming senile and needed a sitter with him during the day. He ended up using it a couple of times when he fell and could not get to a phone because they called me first to track down my coworker. Just makes you wonder if any of the elderly take for granted that they can live by themselves without a full caretaker. I know when I become old I will probably need one of these because I am not one who likes people coming to visit me all the time. I am a loner, have always been a loner, and always will be one. So this will help in case I fall down and need help. I can totally understand why some of the elderly get so ornery now because it is almost like losing some of your freedom when you end up having a caretaker of some sort even if it is for your or our own safety and health.

Aging Gracefully

Is there such a thing? With all of the medical advances in the past centuries one would think this is possible but alas it is not so. I don’t know about you but for me personally I’ve gained weight as I’ve aged which I go to the gym to keep down now and watch what I eat. Then there are those dark circles under the eyes and age lines on my face. Not sure those can be fixed without plastic surgery which I refuse to have done. Then I have bulging disks in my lower back as well as arthritis in the same place which doesn’t help the situation. I can almost see myself when I’m old and decrepit with the onset of Alzheimer’s falling somewhere with my poor back and no one to help me. Sometimes it is a fact of life when you are bound and determined to be independent.

I could see myself like this woman with the walker and a bull horn on the walker to get the people to move out of my way. I’d be bent over because of my back and eventually probably fall somewhere either at home or out. What to do then? Well hopefully I’m not lazy and obtain a . I can’t see the animals calling 911 to help me and I actually know/known other people who have this system or have had as they have passed away and it really is a comfort to know that someone will come to help if something happens when no one is around. It is a comfort to the elderly person and for the family who cares for them. Don’t be afraid to ask for something like this in your home.

Estate Tax

Monday, December 13th, 2010 | Health with Comments Off on Estate Tax

I am not sure if you have been keeping up with the tax deal that has been trying to get passed. It is not that we will get a discount of sorts but to actually keep the tax rate the same as it is now for everyone. In this deal though there is something called the estate tax or death tax as it were where over and under a certain amount of money the families are dealt a tax rate to pay on whatever items are left to the families from the deceased. Now what I cannot understand is this: We pay taxes on everything now. Why must the recipients of the deceased accounts have to pay taxes again? It is just not right. You’d almost have to start selectively dividing everything up before you go to maybe avoid some of the taxes but you would have to have a crystal ball to know when that is.

Elderly people have enough to worry about including obtaining burial insurance for seniors. I’d want to make sure that once I am gone that I have plans laid out for what to do with my body so I would not have to burden my family. They would already be distraught as it is. At least I would hope so once I’m gone. Sadly, this could happen even before I reach that senior age and I should make sure I contact Allstate or go to BurialInsurance.org and obtain a quote for some insurance to make sure all of this would be covered after my demise. I’m betting quite a few of us are out there have not even bothered to think about any of this because we think we have years before anything will happen to us. Hopefully that is true but one cannot account for a freak accident. I mean I have life insurance but does that really cover anything once I’m gone? I have no idea because honestly I have never read it. I just signed up for it when I started at the hospital 20 years ago. I couldn’t tell you even how much it is worth at this point which is sad.

Beauty Products

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Bottega Verde. All opinions are 100% mine.

I love aloe plain and simple. It is the first thing I go for after hitting the beach or pool because I like my skin soft and smooth. I even bathe with soap and shower gel that has aloe or shea in it with the fragrance of vanilla or a pleasant flower smell because I like them. I also buy lip balm that has aloe in it. My lips get so chapped, cracked and split to the point where I will start chewing on them if they are not covered with anything. I literally have like 10-15 lip balms floating around my place, car, and office. I even have a couple in my bookbag that I carry with me to and from work with my school books in it so I can study. Recently I have been snubbed by this one company who does not make my brand of soap anymore so I am on the hunt for another brand now that will do just as good as that one had for around 5-6 years.

Bottega Verde has all natural soaps including one that contains shea butter. I most likely will give it a try. They are pretty much the same price I was paying for my other soaps too. Right now Bottega Verde has an Italian Beauty Package samples as a trial. You just have to pay for shipping which is $4.99. It contains foot mint deodorant cream, cherry blossom body wash, and musk rose face mask cream. I may have to try some of the cherry blossom body wash too. I take the body wash with me when I go to the gym for my shower after wards. I have a hard time trying to convince myself I can wait to take a shower when I get home when I am soaking and stinking up my cloth car seats with all of my sweat.

Mandatory Flu Shots?

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 | Health, Personal with 3 Comments

So I heard through the grapevine that the university was going to make it mandatory for every single person working here to have a flu shot. Whether you actually see patients or not makes no difference. I’d like to see them try to give me one. I think flu shots are a crock of shit just like the Gardasil vaccines they toot. These shots do not prevent you from getting sick so why say they will. People get sucked into believing anything. I also know quite a few people who have become deathly ill after receiving the flu shot too who also refuse to get them anymore.

So let’s review the punishment as it were if you do not receive a flu shot. You have to wear a mask for whatever they deem to be the length of “flu season”. That’s all well and good but who is going to check up these people to see if they truly are wearing a mask? I don’t see this one happening. Also, if you think about it, that’s infringing on a person rights. I could also see some lawsuits happening if they make a big stink about it too. What’s next mandatory sterilization? They can bite me for all I care.

Mobility for the Disabled

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of NMEDA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Working in the medical field you see all sorts of disabilities whether physical or mental. What some of us do not realize is how the physical affects the mental and how difficult it is to do day to day outings such as grocery shopping when you may not have the access to transportation that you or I would normally never even think about.

Take my boss for instance. He is in a wheelchair. His only mode for transportation to and from anywhere is a customized van to load and unload his wheelchair. Recently he had some issues with the wheelchair battery not holding a proper charge and then the lift in the van broke. What irked me and totally ticked off his wife the most about the situation was the fact that the company who installed the lift tried to push him off saying they could not fix it anymore because the original installer was no longer with the company. Apparently this company absorbed the smaller company as they were only on contract at one point. Now how can a company say that when this is vital for him to get around? I won’t even get into when his elevator broke at the house and his house is elevated.

We seem to have an NMEDA dealer in the area and I will have to mention it to them in case they want to look for another company. It looks like this store is one of the Quality Assurance Program dealers as they offer structural vehicle modifiers and mobility equipment installers which is what they would need as their lift is already installed. Plus if/when the need arises and they buy a new van they can to go them for the installation of a new lift and not have to worry about the original installers being bought out.
